Eclipse is a well known Integrated Development Environment (IDE) program. It was mainly developed by IBM as a sort of alternative to Microsoft Visual Studio IDE.

Like any other IDE, Eclipse can be extended with plug-in packages that provide additional functionality. Those plug-ins make possible to use Eclipse for the development of projects in different languages. Some Eclipse plug-in packages are commercial, but many other are free.

PHP Eclipse is a free plug-in package for Eclipse created specifically for the development of PHP projects.

Do not confuse this PHP Eclipse package with Zend PHP Eclipse project. Apparently Zend Eclipse project is an evolution of Zend Studio to turn it into an Eclipse plug-in package. PHP Eclipse is an Open Source software project started in 2002 by a group of independent developers.

"PHP Eclipse: A User Guide" is the first book dedicated exclusively to the Open Source PHP Eclipse plug-in package.

It has eight chapters that include an introduction to the Eclipse IDE architecture, installation of Eclipse and the PHP Eclipse plug-in package, exploring the Eclipse user interface, creating, testing and debugging PHP projects using Eclipse.

There are also other very interesting chapters on how to use other Eclipse plug-ins like: the Quantum DB plug-in for managing data stored in SQL databases, version control with CVS, and deploying sites by using FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and ANT to prepare and update project files in a production server.

Eclipse is an extraordinary tool for developing projects in PHP and other languages. PHP Eclipse is the free plug-in that PHP developers need to take advantage of Eclipse right on budget.

Since the power of Eclipse and PHP Eclipse together is vast, this book can be very handy, especially if you are looking to take advantage of Eclipse power very quickly.
