XML is mostly known as a format for abstract data interchange or for designing media independent documents for the Web. However, it can be used with great advantage in a number of applications only limited by the imagination of the software developers.

"Professional XML" is yet another extraordinary book published by Wrox. It covers extensively the most important applications of XML and the technologies have been developed to manipulate and process information in practically every XML based format.

It would take a long review to mention every aspect that this book covers. Just to make it short here follows a list of XML buzzwords that may give an idea of the depth of the book: DTD, DOM, SAX, namespaces, schemas, linking, querying, XPointer, XPath, XSL, XSLT, databases, SOAP, XML-RPC, ebXML, BizTalk, stylesheets, WAP, WML, etc...

If you are interested in XML and some or most of these buzzwords do not mean much to you, you definitely need this book. If you are not sure about the importance of XML in the present and the future of Internet applications development, maybe this is the time to get into it.

The book provides great coverage of the theory associated with the most important XML concepts but the practical applications area also very well covered in 4 typical case studies.

Many of the programming examples are given in Java but they are not hard to understand if you prefer some other language like PHP, Perl or ASP for instance. The explanations are clear and very illustrative.

Overall, this is a very good book for all developers that are interested in learning XML basics and beyond. Despite the astonishing pace of evolution of XML based technologies this seems to be a book that is already very complete and will be up to date for quite some time.
