Manuel Lemos manuellemos.net"PHP Essentials" is not an extensive book like some others. It is just as the title says. It is about the essentials of PHP programming. It focuses on several key issues that are actually the most important for typical PHP based Web development: Web based database applications with emphasis on the development of e-Commerce applications. This may seem very reductive regarding the whole content of the book, but Julie Meloni addressed objectively the first questions that interest most of PHP beginners have: How do I... - Install PHP (Unix or Windows with Apache or WebTen or Microsoft IIS)? - Start programming with PHP? - Work with databases (Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, mSQL, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, ODBC)? - Authenticate my site users? - Track users with sessions? - Create an application to manage an item database catalog by the Web? - Create a secure virtual store application? This is it. One special mention of honor to the fact that the book is not particularly tied to a given platform or database. Most other books talk about the portability of PHP but end up focusing in PHP under Apache using MySQL as database backend. It seems many people that work with Open Source programs have some kind of allergy to commercial products. The reality is that PHP is capable of interfacing with many commercial Web and database servers and there are many users that use such products. Julie did very well in addressing the issues of interfacing PHP with several commercial products because that is what many PHP newcomers have to use, especially if they came from the Windows world. This is an example that should be followed by any future PHP book authors because the commercial product users are having more and more weight in PHP's user base. Given its content, this book is particularly recommended to users that want to learn how to be productive using PHP in a very short period. If not a very long ago you were just writing static HTML pages or pages based on generic CGI programs written by somebody else, and you would like to evolve and write your own PHP dynamic pages even if you do not have a good programming background, this is book is for you.
