One of the reasons PHP became so popular was the fact that it permitted many people with not very much programming knowledge to evolve from creating static HTML pages to creating more sophisticated scripts that provided dynamic content generation features to their pages, just by inserting a few tags of PHP in the middle of what used to be static HTML.

This characteristic of PHP made it possible for many people without a software development background to start developing their sites with gradually increasing complexity. Many were even capable of building their own businesses using PHP based Web sites as a medium of access to many clients worldwide.

Despite this potential of PHP of bringing in people without much programming knowledge, most of the available literature has in mind people who already have a software development background and are capable of understanding abstract concepts that are often associated with software modeling and implementation.

Learning PHP 5 is a book that was written specifically for these people who do not have a good programming background but are eager to learn and take advantage of PHP to bring dynamic life to their Web site pages.

This book consists of 13 chapters that use a very simple to understand language to present the most important concepts that beginners need to understand to start taking advantage of PHP.

It has chapters that cover data types and variables, program logic and flow control, storing complex data in arrays, grouping reusable blocks of code in functions, Web forms processing, storing information in databases, remembering users with sessions and cookies, handling dates and times, working with files, parsing and generating XML, finding and fixing bugs.

Finally, there is a whole chapter dedicated to miscellaneous subjects. In this chapter there is a section on programming with classes of objects. Despite the title of the book, the only aspect that is PHP 5 specific concerns some extensions that are only available on PHP 5 like those for simple XML handling and SQLite database access.

This book is more about learning PHP than PHP 5 specifically. It is meant mostly for people without great programming knowledge. If you are a beginner or want to learn about PHP without getting lost in too much technical jargon, this book is strongly recommended for you.
