I'm both in favour and at the same time not in favour.
whilst i am all for progression and improving things as time goes by, the various projects I work with and indeed my own websites & clients sites that use mySQL.
whilst mySQLi and PDO are far more better systems to use and provide for faster transactions. it is not an easy/quick task to update a large site that is heavily used to remove mysql extension and convert to PDO/mysqli.
this will surely cause a delay in adoption rates for those versions of php.
